That woman would be Lunia Czechovska, whose beauty enthralled Modigliani, to such an extent that he would paint her as many as fourteen times throughout his short and tragic career, and even live with her for a period when her husband was called to fight in the First World War. ![]() It was through that cadre, composed mostly of artists, that Modigliani would meet his life partner, Jeanne Hébuterne, as well as a woman who, although married, attracted Modigliani’s attention, which in his case generally turned into something akin to an obsession. It was not so much a group that gravitated around Modigliani himself, but rather around his chief patron, the Polish dealer Léopold Zborowski, around whom a whole camarilla formed, as is common with such people.
